Author’s note (6 June 2020): I continue to use YouVersion despite the gamification.
I was reading through Francis Chan’s devotional in YouVersion this morning, Letters to the Church, and one statement stood out to me:
If achievement is your idol, you won’t make time for mystery.
This really struck me. It also seemed rather ironic reading it in an app that offers achievements for Bible reading.
A quick note after recording. I realize that not everyone makes achievements an idol in their lives. However, it would be nice if YouVersion could remove this stumbling block. If I could hide streaks and achievements I could continue using the app.
