New Daredevil Trailer Is Dark and Gritty with Religious Overtones

When studios make dark adaptations of a superhero franchise they’re usually out of place and don’t do the source material any justice.

Marvels’ Daredevil is a story that should be dark and gritty and the new trailer delivers in spades.

There is heavy religious symbolism throughout the trailer which I hope we’ll see in the series as well. Matthew Murdock is a devout Catholic in the comic book and an exploration of his faith and the tension between his desire for revenge and Jesus’s command to love your enemies would make for excellent story-telling.

You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you that you must not oppose those who want to hurt you.justice and conviction convey thoughts of revenge and faith (or principles) pulling at each other. While contrasts between light and dark scenes and the positioning of good versus evil evoke the battle of wills and worldview between Daredevil and the Kingpin.

…love your enemies and pray for those who harass you so that you will be acting as children of your Father who is in heaven.” —Matthew 5:44,5 [CEB]

Struggle, hardship, and pain are evident in some scenes as not only Murdock’s past troubles are revealed but also his current distress in dealing with crime through the justice system and as a vigilante.

Happy are people whose lives are harassed because they are righteous, because the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” —Matthew 5:10 [CEB]

Matthew Murdock’s chosen profession (a lawyer) puts him a position to do good and bring justice to those who need it but it also makes him a target for very powerful enemies.

I have high hopes for Daredevil. This is a superhero series that can make people think and discuss the nature of good and evil and also how justice should be executed.

What do you think? Do you have great expectations for this series of do you think it’s going to be another flop?

Side note: Daredevil and Spider-man teamed up a lot to fight Kingpin because he was a common foe. With the Sony/Marvel deal to share Spider-man I wonder if we’ll see a few glimpses of him in this series.
